Zamioculcas
Origin
The genus *Zamioculcas *, colloquially known as the lucky feather, belongs to the arum family (Araceae). It is distributed in Central Africa and along the east coast of the continent, especially in Zanzibar. *Zamioculcas* forms strong, leathery leaves that grow on long, fleshy stems and resemble feathers in shape. The rare flower consists of a white spadix, which is initially enveloped by a brown spathe, which later folds back.
Appearance
Zamioculcas is a perennial, evergreen plant with pinnate, glossy dark green leaves. The upright stems can grow up to 60 cm long, giving the plant its characteristic feather-like growth. The rootstock is a thickened rhizome that can store water, allowing it to survive longer periods of drought. The flower is inconspicuous, a typical arum-like spadix, which rarely appears in cultivation.
Care
Location: A bright location without direct sunlight is ideal. Zamioculcas also tolerates semi-shaded places and is therefore very popular for indoor use.
Substrate: A mixture of cactus and succulent soil with mineral components such as pumice or lava is best suited to prevent waterlogging.
Watering: Only water when the substrate is completely dry. Excess water must be able to drain away. Zamioculcas tolerates dryness better than waterlogging.
Fertilizer: During the growing season, fertilize with a weakly dosed green plant fertilizer approximately every four weeks. Do not fertilize during dormancy.
Summer/Winter: In summer, the plant can be placed outdoors, but should not be in direct sunlight. In winter, a cool location at about 8 °C is recommended. Watering is reduced, and fertilization is omitted.
Special features
Due to its robust nature and decorative appearance, Zamioculcas is one of the most popular houseplants worldwide. It is ideally suited for offices, living rooms or public areas, as it thrives with little light and care.
Note
Zamioculcas is slightly poisonous. Therefore, no guarantee can be given for its compatibility with animals. For pets or young children, a location out of reach should be chosen.
