Succulents – everything you should know!
The term "succulent" isn't very common in German-speaking countries, even though living rooms and gardens are full of them. To change that, this article provides all the important information on the topic of succulents.
What is succulence?
The word "succulent" is derived from the Latin word sucus , meaning "juice," or succulentus , meaning "juicy." The derivation of the name already suggests the plants' unique ability to develop succulent, fleshy water-storing tissue. They store water in this tissue. There are three different types of succulence: leaf succulence, stem succulence, and root succulence.
Succulence expresses the component in which plants store their water. In leaf succulence, plants store water in their leaves, while in stem succulence, they store water in their stems. There are some exceptions, however, that can store water in multiple parts of the plant.
