Water in its own body
Some species consist almost entirely of water. They cleverly store it in leaves, stems or roots. Their personal emergency reserve for the harsh environment in their homeland.
Leaf Succulent
at night
Photosynthesis in reverse
Many succulents breathe in CO₂ at night and close their pores during the day to prevent water evaporation. This is called CAM photosynthesis.
CAM Strategy
2×
Same idea, invented twice
Cacti from America and euphorbias from Africa look identical but are not related. Convergent evolution.
Convergence
Bright light - but avoid direct midday sun.

Succulents come from regions with lots of light, but often with natural shade. They will be happy in a south or west-facing window. Direct midday sun through glass can burn the leaves.

Bright south or west-facing window, 4 to 6 hours of sun per day
In summer, gladly on a terrace or balcony — fresh air is good
No dark room corner — succulents will stretch unattractively then
No direct midday sun through glass in high summer

💡 Low Light = slow growth, not death
Water only when the soil is completely dry.

The most common cause of death is waterlogging - not drought. In winter, the plant goes dormant: once a month is enough.

Check soil with finger: only water when the top 3 cm are dry
Water thoroughly, then let it drain completely
Do not leave water in the saucer
Do not water at fixed intervals in winter

💧 Too much water kills — too little does not
Aerated, mineral, with good drainage.

Normal potting soil retains too much moisture and suffocates the roots. Proven: mineral cactus substrate or our ready-to-use Pasiora substrate.

Mineral substrate (at least 50% mineral content)
Pot with drainage hole — always, no exception
No normal flower or universal soil
No pots without holes — not even with a gravel layer

Room temperature is enough — cooler in winter is better.

A cool winter dormancy (5–12 °C) allows succulents to sprout more vigorously and even bloom in spring. They do not need high humidity.

Did you know?
How long can a succulent survive without water?
Depending on the species, between 3 months and over 2 years. Its tissue not only stores water but also actively regulates its consumption.
Why do cacti have spines — but other succulents don't?
Spines are modified leaves: protection against predators + dew collectors. Other succulents rely on wax layers, bitter saps, or camouflage.
Why do succulents open their pores at night instead of during the day?
During the day, the heat would cause everything to evaporate. At night, they collect CO₂ and process it during the day. This is called CAM photosynthesis.
