Senecio

Origin

The genus Senecio comprises approximately 1000 different species, of which about 100 are succulent. It belongs to the Asteraceae family and is colloquially known as groundsel. This genus is distributed almost worldwide.

Appearance

Because Senecio is a very large genus, there are also great differences in the appearance of the plants. There are shrubs, trailing plants and groundcover species. The leaf shape is also very diverse. Everything from round to elongated, thin and broad shapes is present. The flowers are yellow, white, red or purple.

Care

Location: Senecio prefers a bright location. A spot by a window with direct sunlight is ideal. The plant should only be protected from the full midday sun.
Substrate: The substrate should be loose and permeable so that excess water can drain away well. Cactus and succulent substrate with mineral components is suitable.
Watering: Senecio does not need to be watered very often. Between waterings, the substrate should dry out, and it's better to underwater than overwater. Succulents do not tolerate waterlogging, so the water should always be able to drain through the hole in the bottom of the pot, or it should be emptied after a few minutes if there is no hole.
Fertilizer: During the growing season, succulents can be fertilized approximately once a month with cactus and succulent fertilizer. During the dormant period, succulents do not require fertilizer.
Summer/Winter: Senecio can spend the summer outdoors, but should be gradually acclimated to the sun and placed in a location protected from rain. Even outdoors, the succulents should be placed in a sunny spot, but protected from direct midday sun. In winter, a bright location indoors with approximately 10°C to 18°C is ideal. During this time, the succulents are in a dormant phase and should only be watered infrequently and no longer fertilized.

Popular species

Senecio cephalophorus: This succulent is perennial, evergreen, and shrub-like. The leaves are oval, green, and arranged in rosettes. Its flowers are star-shaped and a bright orange color. It reaches a height of 50 cm.
Senecio herreianus: This succulent is also called "peas on a string" because of its round, green leaves. Its flowers appear in spring and are white with strong pink accents. Thanks to its long, trailing stems, herreianus is perfectly suited as a hanging plant. You can find a blog article with more information about Senecio herreianus here .

Note: Some Senecio species are poisonous, therefore we cannot guarantee compatibility with animals.
