This volume, covering the families of monocotyledonous plants, includes succulents from 14 families and 52 genera. In total, around 1000 species and over 400 infraspecific taxa are discussed. The families Agavaceae and Aloaceae are presented in their entirety.
The most important genera in the first volume of the lexicon are Agave ("century plants") with more than 200 species, as well as Aloe with approximately 450 species. Other important genera include Haworthia, Bulbine, and Sansevieria ("mother-in-law's tongue") with about 60 species each.
