Monanthes muralis – the delicate beauty from the Canary Islands

Monanthes muralis is an extraordinary, small succulent that fascinates primarily with its delicate rosette structure, its adaptability, and its special origin. It is among the rarely cultivated succulents, making it a true rarity for collectors, but also a decorative plant for succulent enthusiasts looking for something special.

Origin and botanical characteristics

Monanthes muralis belongs to the family Crassulaceae and is native to the Canary Islands. There, it grows in rock crevices, on walls, and in barren, mineral soils. The name "muralis" (Latin for "growing on a wall") refers to its natural habitat.

Thanks to its adaptability to strong sunlight, poor soils, and irregular rainfall, it is robust and easy to care for. These characteristics also make it ideal as a pot and houseplant.

Appearance

  • Growth habit: Compact, low-growing cushion plant with numerous rosettes that can form dense mats.
  • Leaves: Small, fleshy, slightly pointed. Their color varies between fresh green and brownish-green, sometimes with reddish tones in strong sun.
  • Size: Individual rosettes remain small (approx. 1–2 cm), but their multitude creates a decorative overall picture.
  • Flowers: In spring to summer, delicate, star-shaped flowers appear in yellow to greenish-yellow, standing on slender stems above the rosettes.

The delicate combination of fine rosettes and graceful flowers makes Monanthes muralis a plant that surprises upon closer inspection.

Care instructions

Location

Monanthes muralis prefers a bright to semi-shady spot. Direct sun is well tolerated, but it should be gradually accustomed to it to avoid sunburn. An east or west-facing window is ideal.

Watering

Like many succulents, it stores water in its leaves. The substrate should dry out completely before watering again. Waterlogging must be avoided. In winter, it is kept almost dry, as it then enters a resting phase.

Substrate

A loose, well-draining substrate is crucial. Succulent or cactus soil mixed with pumice, perlite, or lava grit is ideal. This ensures that excess water drains away quickly.

Temperature

In summer, it thrives at temperatures between 18 and 25 °C. In winter, it prefers a cooler, but frost-free environment at about 8–12 °C. This winter dormancy promotes flowering.

Fertilization

During the growing season (spring to late summer), a weakly dosed succulent or cactus fertilizer can be administered every 4–6 weeks. No fertilization is done in winter.

Propagation

  • Division: Older plants can be carefully divided. Small rosettes with roots are planted in fresh substrate.
  • Leaf or rosette cuttings: Individual rosettes can be removed and placed in dry substrate. With a little patience, they will form roots.
  • Seeds: Propagation by sowing is less common – however, this requires more time and patience.

Applications

Monanthes muralis is ideally suited for:

  • Collections: A true rarity for lovers of rare succulents.
  • Mini gardens & terrariums: Its small rosettes harmonize wonderfully with stones, moss, and other miniature plants.
  • Home decoration: Ideal for small bowls, bowl arrangements, or as a contrasting plant next to large-leaved succulents.

Tips and tricks

  • Gradually acclimate to sun: Especially when moving from winter quarters to a summer location.
  • Do not keep too wet: Monanthes muralis is sensitive to waterlogging.
