Description
Description
The midday flower family, also called Mesembs, Aizoaceae or Mesembryanthemaceae, is the largest succulent family in the world. They are predominantly found in the winter rainfall regions of the Cape region of South Africa. They are characterized by their robustness and bizarre plant forms and are optimally adapted to the harsh conditions of the Cape region. In addition to the unique ecology of the plants, this book describes the botany, economic importance, and horticultural cultivation of these species. Cultivation is possible both outdoors and under glass. Pests and diseases are also discussed.
Some members of the family are well known in garden and potted plant culture. For example, the "living" or "flowering" stones belong to this popular group, and they are not the only ones that encourage many plant lovers to collect them.
The book is written simply and understandably and features 800 magnificent color photographs. A glossary of technical terms provides clarity. The descriptions of the species are the focus of the book, which is written in German and French. An indispensable work for collectors!
About the Author:
Ernst Jacobus van Jaarsveld is a South African botanist. He studied at the University of Pretoria and holds a diploma in horticulture and an M.Sc. in plant systematics. In 1996, Jaarsveld founded the Botanical Society Conservatory.
