Echeveria Lola: All You Need to Know About Care

The Echeveria Lola is one of the most fascinating succulents, captivating both plant enthusiasts and decor lovers. With its unique appearance, easy-care nature, and versatile uses, it is a valuable addition to any home.

Origin and History of Echeveria Lola

The Echeveria Lola belongs to the Crassulaceae family and is a hybrid created by the renowned breeder Dick Wright. It resulted from the crossbreeding of Echeveria lilacina and Echeveria derenbergii. Wright's goal was to create a plant with a perfect rosette form and soft pastel colors – a goal he undoubtedly achieved with the Lola. Its distinctive appearance and robust characteristics have made it one of the most popular succulents worldwide since its introduction to the plant trade.

Appearance of Echeveria Lola

The Lola is characterized by its compact, rosette-shaped growth habit. Its leaves are thick and slightly pointed, with their color varying depending on light conditions and the season. Generally, it appears in a soft gray with a violet or bluish undertone, covered by a powdery farina – a natural waxy layer. This layer not only gives it a matte, almost alabaster-like appearance but also protects it from intense sunlight.

A special attraction of the Echeveria Lola is its flowers. In spring and summer, it forms graceful flower stalks with bell-shaped blossoms that glow in a warm peach tone. These flowers are not only a visual delight but also a valuable source of nectar for pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Care Requirements

Although the Echeveria Lola appears to be a small work of art, it is surprisingly easy to care for. Its adaptability to various environmental conditions makes it ideal for beginners and experienced plant lovers alike. Here are the most important care instructions in detail:

Location

The Echeveria Lola prefers a bright, sunny location. A spot on the windowsill, ideally on a south or west-facing window, is optimal. In summer, it can also be placed outdoors, as long as it is protected from heavy rain. Sufficient light is crucial for its color development and healthy growth. With too little light, it loses its compact form, and the gaps between the leaves become long, and the plant's center turns pale.

Watering

Like all succulents, the Lola stores water in its leaves and therefore requires little moisture. It is important to let the substrate dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. Especially in winter, during its dormant phase, watering should be reduced to a minimum. A rule of thumb is: better too little water than too much.

Substrate

A well-draining substrate is essential to avoid waterlogging. Special succulent or cactus soil is excellent. Alternatively, conventional potting soil can be mixed with sand or perlite to improve drainage.

Temperature

The Echeveria Lola is accustomed to warm temperatures and thrives particularly well at 20–30 °C. In winter, it prefers a cooler environment with temperatures around 10 °C to maintain its dormant period. It is not frost-tolerant and should therefore be brought indoors in time when temperatures drop.

Fertilization

From spring to autumn (literally from Easter to October), the Lola can be fertilized every two weeks with a potassium-rich succulent fertilizer. This promotes growth and flowering. No fertilization is required during the winter months.
