Sulcorebutia rauschii Violet - everything you need to know about this fascinating succulent

The Sulcorebutia rauschii Violet is a fascinating cactus species that impresses with its striking colors and compact form. This extraordinary plant is popular among both cactus enthusiasts and collectors for its rarity and beauty. It is ideal for growing in pots and, due to its robust nature, is not demanding. In this text, we will discover the special features of this cactus species, its origin, its care requirements, and tips for propagation.

Origin and Special Features

The Sulcorebutia rauschii Violet belongs to the cactus family (Cactaceae) and originates from the high altitudes of Bolivia. It grows in rocky, barren landscapes at elevations between 2,500 and 3,000 meters. Due to these extreme conditions, it has adapted to a life with intense sunlight and cool nights.

What is special about the Violet variety is its striking coloration: it displays an intense violet-purple epidermis, which, combined with its globular shape and fine, almost invisible spines, creates a unique appearance. This coloration is intensified by direct sunlight, making it an absolute eye-catcher.

Appearance

The Sulcorebutia rauschii Violet is a compact cactus species, usually reaching a diameter of about 3 to 5 centimeters. Its globular to slightly flattened shape is typical. The surface is divided into small, raised tubercles arranged in symmetrical rows.

  • Color: The violet coloration of the epidermis can vary depending on light conditions and season. Everything from a gentle purple to an intense dark violet is possible.
  • Spines: The spines are fine, short, and whitish, often making them barely visible. They highlight the plant's elegance.
  • Bloom: In spring or summer, the plant displays impressive, colorful flowers in a vibrant magenta or strong pink. These contrast beautifully with the dark color of the skin and add extra charm to the plant.

Care Instructions

Although the Sulcorebutia rauschii Violet has an exotic appearance, it is surprisingly easy to care for. Here are the most important tips for successful cultivation:

Location

The plant prefers a sunny location that offers as many hours of direct light as possible. A south-facing window is ideal. Alternatively, it is also suitable for a greenhouse or an outdoor spot during the summer months. Be sure to protect it from heavy rain.

Substrate

A well-draining, mineral substrate is essential to prevent waterlogging. Cactus and succulent soil can be mixed with sand, lava grit, or perlite to improve drainage.

Watering

The Sulcorebutia rauschii Violet requires moderate watering during the growing season (spring to autumn). Water only when the substrate has completely dried out. In winter, the plant is barely watered as it rests during this time. Waterlogging should be absolutely avoided, as it can quickly lead to root rot.

Temperature

During the growth phase, the plant thrives at temperatures between 20 and 30 °C. In winter, it needs a cool resting period at about 5 to 10 °C to promote its flowering in the following year. It tolerates light frost but should be protected from prolonged cold.
