Sulcorebutia rauschii Violet – Care, Origin, and Tips

Sulcorebutia rauschii Violet is an extraordinary cactus species that stands out due to its intense colors and compact shape. With its unique appearance, it is a favorite among many cactus enthusiasts and collectors. Since it is relatively easy to care for, it is also suitable for those who are new to rare cacti.

Origin and Special Features

This cactus species originates from the high altitudes of Bolivia, where it grows in barren, rocky regions at elevations of about 2,500 to 3,000 meters. The extreme conditions with abundant sun and cool nights have made the plant resilient.

The Violet variety is characterized by its striking coloration: the skin shows a deep purple-violet that varies in intensity depending on sun exposure. Combined with its spherical shape and barely visible thorns, it creates an unmistakable look that makes it a highlight in any collection.

Detailed Characteristics

Sulcorebutia rauschii Violet is a rather small cactus, usually with a diameter of 3 to 5 cm.

  • Coloration: From light purple to rich violet to dark tones – the color palette depends heavily on light and season.
  • Thorns: Fine, light spines that are very short and barely noticeable. This makes the plant particularly elegant.
  • Flowering: In spring and summer, it adorns itself with large, magenta to pink flowers that stand in strong contrast to the dark skin color.

Care Instructions

Despite its exotic appearance, Sulcorebutia rauschii Violet is easy to care for if its basic needs are known.

Location

It thrives best in a sunny spot – a south-facing window or a bright balcony is ideal. It also feels at home in a greenhouse. Rain should be avoided, as too much moisture is harmful.

Substrate

A mineral, well-draining soil is essential. Cactus or succulent substrates, mixed with lava, perlite, or sand, prevent waterlogging.

Watering

During the growing season (spring to autumn), water moderately – always only when the substrate is completely dry. During winter dormancy, it is sufficient to water very rarely and minimally.

Temperature

During the growth phase, the plant prefers temperatures between 20 and 30 °C. For flowering, a winter dormancy at 5 to 10 °C is important. It can tolerate light sub-zero temperatures for short periods, but not prolonged frost.

Fertilization

Fertilize every 4–6 weeks in summer with a potassium-rich cactus fertilizer. No fertilizer in winter.

Propagation

Propagation can be achieved in two ways:

  • Offsets: Many plants develop side shoots that can be carefully separated and planted.
  • Sowing: Seeds can be sown, but require patience. They germinate reliably at temperatures of 20–25 °C, but grow slowly.

Possible Uses

Sulcorebutia rauschii Violet is excellently suited for:

  • Windowsill arrangements: Ideal in combination with other mini cacti or succulents.
  • Collections: Particularly a coveted rarity due to its rare violet coloration.
  • Outdoor decoration in summer: On the terrace or balcony, it quickly becomes a highlight, as long as it remains protected from moisture.

Frequently Asked Questions about Sulcorebutia rauschii Violet

  1. How often to water?
During the growing phase, every 1–2 weeks, only when the substrate is dry. Water very little in winter.

  2. Why does the violet color fade?
Usually an indication of too little light. Direct sun intensifies the coloration.

  3. When does it bloom?
In spring to summer, provided it was kept cool in winter.

  4. What pot size is suitable?
A small pot with drainage holes, slightly larger than the plant's diameter.

  5. How to avoid pests?
Regularly check, keep dry, and treat mealybugs or spider mites in time if infested.

  6. Is it frost hardy?
Only short-term light sub-zero temperatures. Prolonged frost must be avoided.

  7. How often to fertilize?
Every 4–6 weeks during the summer.

  8. Why no flowers?
Without winter dormancy at cooler temperatures, flowering usually fails to occur.

  9. Can it be cultivated outdoors?
Yes, possible in summer – but definitely protect from rain.

  10. How old does it get?
With good care, the plant can live for several decades.

Summary

  • Growth habit: Small, spherical, 3–5 cm diameter
  • Coloration: Intense violet, varies depending on light
  • Flowering: Strong pink to magenta, appears in spring/summer
  • Location: Sunny and warm, cool in winter
  • Substrate: Mineral, well-drained
  • Care: Water moderately, almost dry in winter, fertilize every few weeks

The Sulcorebutia rauschii Violet is therefore not only an exotic collector's item but also a robust plant that provides long-lasting joy with little effort and stands out due to its special coloration.
